WLDC Linguistic Research

The main research function for the WLDC is to identify linguistic entities for inclusion within the GeoLang Metadata Register (GLMDR) either as part of or to enhance the ISO 639-6 code. To this end the following activities are planned or are under way

  • The first 25000 to 30000 entries are being compiled by the GeoLang Research Team in accordance with a defined procedure.
    • The entries with three letter representations and their identifiers have been adopted meticulously without change from the ISO 639 standards
    • The entries for language variants with alpha-4 representations have in the first instance been obtained from the early drafts of the ISO 639-6 database as compiled by ICT/Linguasphere with the assistance of BSI Technical Committee TS/1. These have since been re-compiled to meet the current ISO 639 hierarchical format and as far as possible maintaining compatibility and consistency with the Summer Institute of Linguist’s Ethnologue with further guidance from Merrit Rhulen’s Guide to the World’s Languages Volume 1: Classification
    • Starting towards the end of April 2007 the completed Phyla thus compiled will be made available to from this site with linked connections from elsewhere and will be supplied to OmegaWiki.
    • The GeoLang Research Team have been carrying out varying levels of research on the accuracy and reliability of the linguistic entities represented by alpha-4 codes but further verification and validation is required  for those entries to achieve the higher levels of ISO 11179-6 administered item status. The same level of verification and validation will be applied to new submissions following completion of that first activity, as described below.
  • It is envisaged that further submissions will be made for inclusion from the following at least
    • OmegaWiki community
    • WLDC members
    • GeoLang Research Team
  • Verification and validation of the data will be performed by the GeoLang Research Team according to a procedure that will include traceable reference to community discussion within OmegaWiki, input from WLDC Members, the internet generally and where necessary the advice or recommendation of the WLDC Board.
  • The ISO 639-6 standard provides a model for the maintenance of all the information resulting from this research to be accessible from the relevant linguistic identifier.
